Cannabis: potential use in treating surgical wounds

Cannabis: potential use in treating surgical wounds

The possible medicinal benefits of cannabis plant have attracted a lot of attention lately. Even though the plant was attracting interest along the centuries. The medical potential of this adaptable is still under investigation. However, cannabis plant has attracted interest with the potential for cannabidiol, or CBD, to fasten the healing of wounds.

By contrasting the effectiveness of CBD with traditional wound care treatments — more especially, povidone-iodine — in encouraging wound healing in a controlled environment, described study aims to further investigate this developing topic. This study intends to give a thorough evaluation of how CBD compares to accepted medical therapies using a rat model with surgically created wounds, thereby opening the door for new methods to wound care.

Results of checking new wound care method

Rats were given anesthesia for the trial, and afterward, they underwent standard wound care protocols for ten days. Scientists perfomred histological studies of the wound tissues to evaluate the healing process. Furthermore, the levels of important biochemical indicators were measured by tst method for analysis of cellular bioactivities, called ELISA.

So, in case of the epidermal growth factor (EGF), there were no appreciable variations in the levels between the groups receiving hemp seed oil, hemp essential oil, and povidone-iodine. On the other hand, the EGF levels were significantly lower in the CBD group. The hemp seed oil group’s higher EGF levels imply that it might improve EGF, which is essential for wound healing.

Next checked factor was monocyte chemoattractant protein. The results of the investigation showed that the povidone-iodine-treated group had considerably lower levels than the other groups. It suggests that this solution may be a more effective way to suppress this protein’s expression than hemp-derived products.

Additionally checked was collagen, on which depends the tissue elasticity and strength. The investigation revealed no  variations in its expression among the groups. Histological examination of the groups treated with CBD and hemp extracts, especially by the tenth day, showed fibroplasia, newly created blood vessels, and well-organized collagen fibers. In contrast to the povidone-iodine group, the wound tissue in the CBD, hemp seed oil, and hemp essential oil groups had fully developed by the 21st day.

New wound healing method?

The results of this study demonstrate the potential of hemp extracts, such as hemp seed oil and hemp essential oil, to aid in the healing of wounds. These extracts showed effects that were on par with, if not better than, those of CBD and povidone-iodine in a number of important areas of the wound healing process, including collagen organization, monocyte chemoattractant protein inhibition, and EGF augmentation.

Comparing cannabis extracts to pure CBD and conventional wounds care products like povidone-iodine reveals a number of benefits. These extracts are safe, affordable, and don’t come with the usual iodine risks—like problems with the thyroid gland.

Furthermore, cannabis extracts may be more efficient in healing wounds if they contain trace amounts of THC, perhaps as a result of lowered stress levels and improved immune system activation.

In conclusion, hemp extracts may offer a secure and reliable substitute for traditional therapies, especially when used in a regular wound care practice. Their natural composition, cost-effectiveness, and capacity to promote wound healing make them a viable choice for wider medical uses.
