Poland: growing medical cannabis market

Poland Growing medical cannabis Market: A Sign of Changing Times

In the year 2023, pharmacies in Poland witnessed a significant surge in the sale of medical cannabis, as reported by the Center for e-Health. According to data, pharmacies sold over 4.5 tons of medical cannabis, marking an increase of 3.5 tons compared to the previous year, 2022.

Medical cannabis market growth in Poland

In 2023, pharmacies fulfilled a total of 276,807 prescriptions for medical cannabis, amounting to over 4.6 tons of cannabis. This indicates a notable shift in the medical market, with more patients turning to cannabis-based treatments for various conditions.

The figures provided by the Center for e-Health illustrate a rapid escalation in the sale of medical cannabis. In 2022, there were 108,847 such prescriptions, resulting in just over a ton of medical cannabis dispensed to patients. This number pales in comparison to the figures of 2023, showcasing a growing acceptance and adoption of cannabis-based therapies within the medical community.

As per the Center for e-Health, the dramatic increase in sales can be attributed partly to the implementation of a new analytical model towards the end of the previous year. This model enables more precise data collection, encompassing all prescription medications. Data regarding the sale of medical cannabis is sourced from descriptions of prescriptions issued and fulfilled. However, it’s worth noting that the majority of medical cannabis prescriptions are not reimbursed by the National Health Fund (NFZ), leading to some discrepancies in the quality of data provided by certain pharmacies.

Medical cannabis legalisation in Poland

It’s essential to recall that the sale of medical cannabis in pharmacies was legalised in Poland back in 2017. Under the Anti-Drug Act, which came into effect in November 2017, doctors gained the authority to prescribe unregistered cannabis products. This move legalised the use of cannabis materials such as flowers, resin, and extracts for pharmaceutical purposes, offering patients locally produced alternatives at more affordable prices compared to imported products.

The growing acceptance and medical cannabis use in Poland signifies a shifting attitude towards alternative forms of therapy within the medical community and the broader society. This trend not only reflects evolving perceptions surrounding cannabis but also underscores the need for comprehensive research and regulation to ensure safe and effective usage of medical cannabis products. As Poland continues to navigate its stance on medical cannabis, it’s imperative to prioritise patient access, medical efficacy, and regulatory oversight to harness the full potential of cannabis-based treatments while ensuring patient safety and well-being.

Poland continues to observe the therapeutic potential of cannabis. That is why recent shift towards local production also emphasizes the importance of this developing market.
